NDP leader wants clarification before supporting federal budget

Still no firm commitment from the NDP for a vote in favour of the federal budget.

Leader Jagmeet Singh says discussions are underway with the Liberals.

“There are outstanding elements that we’re still waiting on. There were some commitments made. Some progress has been made, but I wanted some more clarity before we make our final decision clear. I need to hear that clarification before I can move forward.”

The NDP has raised concerns over the disability benefit and how they believe the amount in the budget was too little. They say not enough people can access it and there’s a fear over the province clawing back the amount. They’ve also expressed concerns about Indigenous services and a lack of justice for Indigenous people.

“Where more progress is being made is around ensuring that the clawback question is being addressed. So, we’re looking to see more commitments around that. We’re going to continue to fight back because we know that people in the disability community have raised this concern. I know the Liberals have heard those same concerns. So we’ll continue to fight for a more fair amount. We’re seeing some progress on the clawback question,” Singh adds about talks with the Liberals.

The federal budget vote is expected this week.
