The City of Kenora is getting rid of it’s conventional transit system and going with micro-transit system instead.
Ridership on the transit system has been dropping in recent years and the city’s buses have been breaking down frequently.
Director of Corporate Services Heather Pihulak micro-transit is an on-demand, ride sharing system.
“When you call for an Uber, it’s just one person going to one destination, you’re not ride-sharing,” explains Pihulak.
“A micro-transit system is a ride share, just like a regular fixed route system, only it’s picking you up in your location and taking you to a specific destination.”
Pihulak adds the city’s conventional transit system has proved to very problematic and the micro-transit system has been successful in other municipalities.
“I’ve been talking to other communities that have launched it in the last year it has been hugely successful. Ridership has increased, in some cases 800 percent and customers are really happy with the service.”
Pihulak says they are working with a company that will provide the service later this year.
She adds that they will be consulting with the public in the next few weeks about the new system.
