Calandra still working on new Integrity rules

Ontario’s Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister says he will not have new integrity rules for municipal officials in place by June.

Paul Calandra informed delegates attending the Rural Ontario Municipal Association in February that he was working on something that would be effective and constitutional.

He expected that legislation to be introduced before MPPs take their summer recess.

Calandra says the issue is more complex than he thought.

“During that development of this, I’m starting to discover that it’s, in fact, far more complex than I had ever thought. Even the regime surrounding the integrity acts throughout municipalities across the province of Ontario, each of them operates in a different fashion,” says Calandra.

He says he has reached out to Ontario’s integrity commissioner for recommendations to improve the system.

He now hopes to have at least draft legislation he can bring to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for input.

“There is a lot more work to do on this because the more I look into it, the more disjointed and fragmented the process is. And I want to make sure that whatever we do, it is effective.”
