KCA receives funding to create primary health team

The Kenora Chiefs Advisory is getting just over 3.6 million dollars to help set up a primary health care team.

Of that amount $2.9 million will be annual funding and $710,000 will help set it up.

A special ceremony was held on the Dalles First Nation on Friday to celebrate the announcement.

Jennifer Dreaver is the executive director of KCA and says they began the journey in 2020 with a decision by their board of directors.

She says the creation of the health team is a vision that’s not completed yet, but the funding gives them wind in their sails to continue the journey.

Indigenous Affairs minister Greg Rickford was on hand for the funding announcement and says the creation of the health team will relieve pressure on the hospital.

He says the goal is for the ER to be used only in case of emergency visits, and not primary care.
