The City of Kenora is going to spend $1.6 million to put a road across the former Abitibi mill site.
It will connect 9th Street North to Main Street North.
Mayor Andrew Poirier says it will allow for the development of 172 apartment units in that area.
“We’re going to see the fruits of that $1.6 million over time,” Poirier told council at a special meeting Tuesday morning.
“We’re not going to see it overnight, but we’re going to see positive results in fairly short order.”
Director of Economic Development and Tourism Stace Gander says the actual road will be built this year.
“Under that agreement the landowner will construct the road, water and sewer infrastructure, and the city will acquire that road and infrastructure after the completion and a two year maintenance period.”
Under the resolution passed, five apartment buildings will be built along underground infrastructure and the new road.
Two are for 32 units and three will include space for 36 units each.
The money for the road comes from the city’s Future Development Reserves, but won’t be outlaid all at once.
The city has a schedule for when the funds will be dispersed.
The agreement calls for construction work on the apartments to begin by April 1st of 2027.
